Techno-Economic Analysis of a Hydrogen-Based Power Supply Backup System for Tertiary Sector Buildings: A Case Study in Greece

In view of the European Union’s strategy on hydrogen for decarbonization and buildings’ targets, use in buildings is expected future. Backup power usually provided with diesel generators (DGs). this study, a fuel cell (HFC) supply backup system studied. Its operation compared to DG techno-economic analysis latter’s replacement an HFC conducted by calculating relevant key performance indicators (KPIs). The developed approach presented case study school building Greece. Based school’s electricity loads, which are calculated dynamic energy simulation shortages scenarios, system’s characteristics defined, KPIs calculated. It was found that can reduce annual CO2 emissions up 400 kg has lower cost than DG. However, due its high investment cost, levelized higher, existing unviable current market situation. reveals subsidies around 58–89% required foster deployment systems buildings.
